Maximilianstrasse is one of the 4 main avenues in Munich.

The avenue starts at Max-Joseph-Platz where the National Theater and the Residenz are located.

It was planned and started in 1850 by King Maximilian II of Bavaria and the main architect was Friedrich Bürklein.

With the design of the avenue, King Maximilian aimed to “invent” a new architectural style that combines the best features of historic and modern models.

The avenue was severely damaged during World War II bombings and has been restored.
